How It Works

Selenium is a mineral we obtain in small amounts from food, especially from soils where crops and grazing animals concentrate it. Once absorbed, the body builds it into a rare amino acid called selenocysteine, which sits at the active core of a family of proteins known as selenoproteins. These selenoproteins do important work, including neutralizing reactive byproducts of normal metabolism and helping convert thyroid hormone into its more active form. In everyday terms, selenium acts as a small but essential cofactor that helps key protective and metabolic enzymes do their jobs.

The Science & Mechanism

Selenium's biological activity is exerted almost entirely through selenoproteins, in which the element is present as the amino acid selenocysteine encoded co-translationally at UGA codons. Roughly twenty-five selenoproteins have been described in humans. Among the best characterized are the glutathione peroxidases (GPx family), which use selenium at their catalytic site to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides, working alongside glutathione to limit oxidative stress. The thioredoxin reductases (TrxR) similarly depend on a selenocysteine residue and help regenerate reduced thioredoxin, supporting redox signaling and antioxidant regeneration. Selenium is also essential to the iodothyronine deiodinases (DIO1, DIO2, DIO3), the enzymes that convert thyroxine (T4) into the more metabolically active triiodothyronine (T3) and regulate local thyroid hormone availability. Additional selenoproteins, such as selenoprotein P, serve as the principal transport and distribution form in plasma. Research explores how adequate selenium status is associated with balanced redox tone, healthy thyroid hormone metabolism, and normal immune-cell function, while both deficiency and excess are recognized as biologically meaningful across a relatively narrow range.
