Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and the main building block of bone and teeth. Beyond structure, it acts as a signaling ion essential to nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and blood clotting.

How It Works

Calcium is a mineral that the body uses in two very different ways. The vast majority is stored in your bones and teeth, where it forms the hard mineral lattice that gives your skeleton its strength. A tiny but tightly controlled fraction circulates in the blood and inside cells, where it works as a chemical messenger that helps nerves fire, muscles contract, and blood clot. Because the body cannot make calcium, it must come from diet, and it depends on partners like vitamin D and magnesium to be absorbed and used well.

The Science & Mechanism

Calcium exists in the body in two pools. About 99 percent is deposited in the skeleton as hydroxyapatite, a crystalline calcium-phosphate mineral bound to a collagen matrix, giving bone both rigidity and a reservoir the body can draw on. The remaining fraction in blood and cells is kept within a narrow range by an elegant feedback system: when serum calcium falls, the parathyroid glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH), which mobilizes calcium from bone, increases reabsorption in the kidney, and stimulates conversion of vitamin D to its active form (calcitriol) to boost intestinal absorption. The hormone calcitonin and the calcium-sensing receptor help fine-tune this balance. As a signaling ion, intracellular calcium acts as a near-universal second messenger: it triggers neurotransmitter release at nerve terminals, drives the actin-myosin cross-bridging behind muscle contraction, and participates in the clotting cascade and enzyme activation. Research consistently links adequate calcium intake, paired with vitamin D, with the maintenance of bone mineral density across the lifespan, particularly during growth and later adulthood.
