Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts, similar to the friendly microbes that naturally inhabit a healthy digestive tract. In everyday terms, they act like helpful tenants in the gut, competing for space and food so that less desirable microbes have a harder time taking hold. As they settle in and metabolize the fibers you eat, they produce compounds that nourish the cells lining your intestine and help keep that lining intact. The Science & Mechanism

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit, and most studied strains belong to the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera or to the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. Their effects are largely strain-specific and operate through several mechanisms researchers continue to map. By competing for nutrients and adhesion sites on the intestinal epithelium and by producing organic acids and antimicrobial peptides such as bacteriocins, probiotic strains are studied for their role in competitive exclusion of less favorable microbes. Many strains ferment dietary fibers into short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, acetate, and propionate, which serve as fuel for colonocytes and are associated with signaling that supports the gut barrier. Research also explores their influence on tight-junction proteins that regulate intestinal permeability and on mucin production by goblet cells. A substantial body of work examines cross-talk with gut-associated lymphoid tissue and dendritic cells, where probiotics may modulate cytokine signaling and regulatory T-cell activity. Emerging investigation into the gut-brain axis considers how microbial metabolites, vagal signaling, and neurotransmitter precursors connect the microbiome to broader physiology.
