How It Works

Omega-3 fatty acids are fats your body makes only inefficiently, and the two that matter most for cells, the brain, and the heart are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Fish are the usual dietary source, but fish do not actually manufacture these fats. They accumulate them from the marine microorganisms lower in the food web, the true original producers. Algal omega-3 goes straight to that source: specific strains of marine algae are grown in controlled cultivation and their oil is extracted, giving a plant-based supplement that delivers preformed DHA, and often EPA, without any fish. In everyday terms, these fats become part of the flexible outer membranes of your cells, especially in the brain, retina, and heart, where they help those tissues stay fluid, responsive, and able to signal. The Science & Mechanism

DHA and EPA are long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids that incorporate into the phospholipids of cell membranes, altering their fluidity, curvature, and the behavior of embedded receptors and ion channels. DHA is especially concentrated in neural and retinal tissue, where it supports membrane structure and synaptic function, while EPA is more prominent in signaling roles. Both serve as substrates for enzymes such as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which convert them into specialized pro-resolving mediators, including resolvins, protectins, and maresins, molecules research describes as helping actively resolve inflammation rather than merely suppress it. Because these mediators are less inflammatory than those made from the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid, the balance of omega-3 to omega-6 intake is a recurring theme in the literature. The plant precursor ALA, found in flax and walnuts, converts to EPA and especially DHA only inefficiently in humans, which is why a preformed source matters. Marine microalgae and related single-celled organisms are the primary biosynthesizers of DHA and EPA at the base of the food web, and fish acquire these fats by feeding on them, so algal oil supplies the identical molecules directly. Studies compare algal DHA to fish oil for raising blood and tissue omega-3 levels, often using the omega-3 index as a marker.
