Choline is an essential nutrient the body uses to build cell membranes, transport fat out of the liver, and make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. How It Works

Choline is a water-soluble nutrient grouped with the B vitamins, found richly in eggs, liver, and other whole foods. In everyday terms, it works as a versatile building block: the body uses it to construct the fatty outer walls of every cell, to package and ship fat away from the liver, and to make acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory, muscle movement, and attention. It also feeds into the same methylation pathways as folate and vitamin B12, helping cells run countless everyday chemical reactions. The body can make a small amount of choline on its own, but research suggests most people do not produce enough to cover their needs, which is why diet and, when appropriate, supplementation are considered individually.

The Science & Mechanism

Choline is an essential quaternary amine nutrient that supplies the body with a critical pool of methyl groups and structural components. It is the backbone of phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, phospholipids that form the bilayer of cell membranes and the lipoprotein particles (VLDL) that export triglycerides from the liver; inadequate choline is associated with hepatic fat accumulation. Choline is also the direct precursor for acetylcholine, synthesized by choline acetyltransferase and acting at nicotinic and muscarinic receptors to support cholinergic signaling in memory, autonomic function, and neuromuscular transmission. In the mitochondria, choline is oxidized to betaine, which donates a methyl group to remethylate homocysteine into methionine via betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase, an alternate route that runs parallel to the folate- and B12-dependent pathway and feeds S-adenosylmethionine, the universal methyl donor. Because these pathways overlap, choline demand rises when folate is low, and vice versa. The body synthesizes some phosphatidylcholine de novo through the PEMT enzyme, but research describes wide variation driven by sex hormones and common genetic polymorphisms in PEMT and MTHFR, which is one reason individual requirements differ.
