The Science & Mechanism

Potassium is the predominant intracellular cation, with roughly 98 percent held inside cells and only a small fraction in the bloodstream. This steep gradient is maintained by the sodium-potassium ATPase pump, which continuously moves potassium in and sodium out using cellular energy. The resulting electrochemical gradient establishes the resting membrane potential that excitable cells rely on, so potassium is central to nerve impulse conduction and to the depolarization and repolarization cycles that drive skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle contraction. In the kidney, potassium handling is coordinated with sodium through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and higher dietary potassium is associated with increased urinary sodium excretion, a mechanism research explores in relation to blood-pressure regulation and vascular tone. Potassium also serves as a cofactor for certain enzymes and participates in acid-base balance and glycogen and protein synthesis. Because serum levels are held within a narrow range by hormonal and renal control, the balance between intake, cellular shifts, and excretion is closely governed, which is why potassium status is interpreted through laboratory testing rather than symptoms alone.
