How It Works

Omega-3s are a family of essential fats your body cannot make efficiently on its own, so they must come from diet or supplements. Fish oil is a concentrated source of the two most active marine forms, EPA and DHA, which are the same fats found in cold-water fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel. In everyday terms, these fats become building blocks in the outer membrane of nearly every cell, keeping membranes flexible and helping cells communicate. DHA is especially concentrated in the brain and the retina, while EPA is a key raw material the body uses to make molecules that help resolve inflammation. The Science & Mechanism

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats defined by a double bond three carbons from the methyl end. The two marine forms, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6), are readily incorporated into the phospholipids of cell membranes, where they influence membrane fluidity, ion-channel behavior, and the activity of embedded receptors. Once in the membrane, EPA and DHA serve as substrates for enzymes such as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which convert them into three-series prostaglandins and thromboxanes and five-series leukotrienes that are generally less pro-inflammatory than the eicosanoids made from the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid. EPA and DHA are also precursors to specialized pro-resolving mediators, including resolvins, protectins, and maresins, that research describes as actively helping bring the inflammatory response to a close. DHA is structurally central to neuronal and retinal membranes and supports synaptic function, while omega-3s also modulate transcription factors such as PPARs and reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis, an effect studied in the context of blood lipids. Research further explores omega-3 influence on heart-rate regulation, endothelial function, and the omega-3-to-omega-6 balance that ongoing work continues to characterize.
