EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and marine oils that serves as a building block for the body's inflammation-resolving signaling molecules. How It Works

EPA is one of the two main marine omega-3 fatty acids, the other being DHA, and it comes largely from oily fish and algae. In everyday terms, the body uses EPA as raw material to make signaling molecules that help turn the inflammatory response up when needed and, importantly, help wind it back down again. It becomes part of your cell membranes, subtly changing how cells communicate and respond to stress. Because the typical modern diet often supplies far more omega-6 fats than omega-3s, many people carry a low omega-3 status without realizing it. The Science & Mechanism

EPA (20:5n-3) is a 20-carbon polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid. It incorporates into the phospholipids of cell membranes, where it competes with the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid as a substrate for cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. Metabolizing EPA rather than arachidonic acid shifts the balance toward 3-series prostaglandins and thromboxanes and 5-series leukotrienes, mediators generally described as less inflammatory than their arachidonic-acid-derived counterparts. Beyond simply diluting pro-inflammatory signaling, EPA is the precursor to specialized pro-resolving mediators, notably the E-series resolvins, which are studied as active signals that promote the resolution phase of inflammation rather than merely suppressing it. EPA also serves as a ligand for nuclear receptors such as PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma, influencing genes involved in lipid metabolism, and it can modulate membrane fluidity and the behavior of ion channels and receptors. In cardiovascular research, EPA is associated with effects on triglyceride levels, platelet aggregation, and endothelial function. Its distinct handling compared with DHA is one reason research increasingly examines EPA-predominant formulations separately.
