How It Works

Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body, with most of it stored in bone and inside cells. In everyday terms, it acts like a spark plug and a brake at the same time: it helps your cells make and use energy while also calming overexcited nerves and muscles. The Science & Mechanism

Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation and serves as an obligatory cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions. It stabilizes ATP, the cell's primary energy currency, by binding its phosphate groups to form the biologically active Mg-ATP complex that most kinases and ATPases require. In muscle and nerve tissue, magnesium acts as a natural physiological modulator of calcium: it competes for binding sites and helps regulate calcium entry, which is why it is studied in the context of muscle relaxation and healthy vascular tone. At the neuronal level, magnesium sits in the pore of the NMDA glutamate receptor, dampening excitatory signaling, an action researchers associate with nervous-system calm and sleep regulation. Magnesium is also required for the enzymes that synthesize and stabilize DNA and RNA, for glutathione production, and for the function of the sodium-potassium ATPase pump that maintains membrane potential. Research further explores magnesium's association with insulin signaling, parathyroid and vitamin D metabolism, and the activity of GABAergic pathways involved in relaxation. Roughly 99 percent of body magnesium is intracellular or in bone, so blood levels only partly reflect total status.
