How It Works

Vitamin A is a family of fat-soluble compounds that includes preformed retinoids (retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid) from animal sources and provitamin carotenoids such as beta-carotene from colorful plants. In the body, it is best known for enabling low-light and color vision, where retinal combines with proteins in the retina to detect light. It also helps skin and the linings of the eyes, lungs, and gut stay healthy and act as barriers. Beyond those roles, vitamin A participates in gene signaling that guides how cells grow, specialize, and coordinate immune responses. Because it is stored in the liver and fat, the body draws on reserves between meals.

The Science & Mechanism

Vitamin A functions through two broad mechanisms: a visual cycle and a hormone-like gene-signaling system. In the retina, 11-cis-retinal binds opsin to form rhodopsin; when light strikes it, the retinal isomerizes and triggers phototransduction, the first step in low-light vision. Separately, retinol is oxidized to retinoic acid, which acts as a ligand for nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs). These receptors bind retinoic acid response elements on DNA and regulate transcription of genes involved in epithelial differentiation, embryonic patterning, and immune cell maturation. Dietary retinyl esters and carotenoids are absorbed with fat, packaged into chylomicrons, and stored in hepatic stellate cells as retinyl esters; retinol-binding protein then delivers retinol to peripheral tissues. Research describes vitamin A's role in maintaining mucosal barriers, supporting T-cell and antibody-mediated immunity, and sustaining goblet-cell mucus production. Carotenoids such as beta-carotene are cleaved by beta-carotene oxygenase to yield retinal, giving the body a regulated, provitamin route to meet needs without excess preformed intake.
