How It Works
Physical activity refers to the everyday movement of your muscles — walking, resistance training, cardio, or simply staying active — that draws on stored energy. When you move, working muscles behave like a temporary endocrine organ, releasing signaling molecules into the bloodstream. In the short term a hard session creates a brief spike of stress and inflammation, but the body's adaptive repair response tends to leave the system calmer and better regulated afterward. Over weeks and months, this repeated cycle is associated with a lower baseline of chronic, low-grade inflammation. In simple terms, regular movement appears to "train" the immune system much as it trains the heart and muscles.
The Science & Mechanism
During contraction, skeletal muscle secretes myokines — signaling proteins including interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-15, and irisin — that coordinate metabolic and immune responses. Exercise-derived IL-6 behaves differently from chronically elevated IL-6: it transiently rises, then drives release of anti-inflammatory mediators such as IL-10 and IL-1 receptor antagonist while suppressing tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Regular training is associated with reduced visceral adipose tissue, a major source of pro-inflammatory adipokines, and with lower circulating C-reactive protein (CRP). Movement also mobilizes and redistributes immune cells, and habitual activity is studied for supporting immune surveillance and a favorable balance of regulatory versus inflammatory T-cell populations. Additional pathways described in research include activation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory reflex via the vagus nerve, improved insulin sensitivity that lowers glycation-driven inflammation, and enhanced mitochondrial and antioxidant capacity that reduces oxidative stress. Contracting muscle further supports clearance of tryptophan metabolites along the kynurenine pathway, a mechanism explored in relation to mood and neuroinflammation.
