How It Works
Glutathione is a small molecule made from three amino acids that your cells produce continuously. It acts like a cellular sponge, mopping up unstable, reactive molecules before they can damage proteins, membranes, and DNA. It also helps the liver package and clear certain toxins and metabolic byproducts. Because it is used up in this work, the body constantly recycles and remakes it, and levels can be influenced by age, stress, illness, and nutrient status.
The Science & Mechanism
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide of cysteine, glutamate, and glycine, with a reactive thiol group on cysteine that carries most of its activity. It is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant and functions as the cell's primary redox buffer. GSH donates electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and this reaction is catalyzed by glutathione peroxidase enzymes, which also require selenium as a cofactor. In doing so GSH becomes oxidized to glutathione disulfide (GSSG), and the GSH-to-GSSG ratio is widely used as a marker of a cell's redox state. Glutathione reductase, using NADPH, regenerates GSH from GSSG to sustain the cycle. Beyond direct scavenging, GSH is central to phase II liver detoxification: glutathione S-transferase enzymes conjugate it to xenobiotics, drugs, and electrophilic metabolites, making them water-soluble for excretion. Research also describes roles in regenerating vitamins C and E, modulating immune and inflammatory signaling, supporting mitochondrial function, and regulating protein thiols through S-glutathionylation. Availability of cysteine is generally considered the rate-limiting factor in glutathione synthesis.
