How It Works

Your thyroid is a small gland at the base of the neck that produces hormones acting like a thermostat for the whole body, influencing energy, temperature, and how fast cells work. To build those hormones, the thyroid needs iodine, a mineral you can only get from food, iodized salt, or supplementation. The Science & Mechanism

Iodine's defining role is structural: it is built directly into thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), whose names reflect their four and three iodine atoms. Circulating iodide is actively pulled into thyroid follicular cells by the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS), then oxidized and attached to tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin by thyroid peroxidase (TPO) in a reaction that depends on hydrogen peroxide. The resulting mono- and diiodotyrosines couple to form T4 and, in smaller amounts, T3. T4 is the principal secreted hormone and is later converted in peripheral tissues to the more active T3 by selenium-dependent deiodinases, so thyroid nutrition extends well beyond iodine alone. T3 then binds nuclear thyroid hormone receptors to regulate gene transcription governing basal metabolic rate, thermogenesis, protein synthesis, and neurodevelopment. Iron is required for TPO activity, zinc and vitamin A participate in hormone signaling and receptor function, and the gland autoregulates uptake when iodine is high (the Wolff-Chaikoff effect). Research studies both deficiency and excess in relation to thyroid function, which is why balanced, individualized status is the physiologic focus.
