The Science & Mechanism
Coenzyme Q10 is a lipid-soluble benzoquinone with a ten-unit isoprenoid tail that anchors it within cellular membranes. Its defining role is in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, where it sits between Complex I and Complex II upstream and Complex III downstream. There it cycles between three redox states: fully oxidized ubiquinone, the ubisemiquinone radical, and fully reduced ubiquinol. By accepting electrons from NADH and FADH2 dehydrogenases and delivering them to Complex III, CoQ10 helps pump protons across the inner membrane, generating the electrochemical gradient that drives ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. Its reduced form, ubiquinol, is also a potent lipid-phase antioxidant that scavenges peroxyl radicals, limits lipid peroxidation, and helps regenerate the antioxidant forms of vitamin E and vitamin C. CoQ10 is synthesized endogenously through the mevalonate pathway, the same pathway that produces cholesterol, which is why research explores lower CoQ10 status in the context of statin use. Levels are highest in metabolically demanding tissues such as the heart, liver, and skeletal muscle, and tend to decline with age. Supplemental absorption is limited and improves when taken with dietary fat.
