How It Works

Cortisol is a steroid hormone released by the adrenal glands, two small glands that sit atop the kidneys. It is often called the primary stress hormone because levels rise when the body needs to respond to a demand, whether that is a hard workout, a stressful day, or simply waking up in the morning. In everyday terms, cortisol acts like an internal signal that says get ready and get going: it releases stored energy, raises alertness, and temporarily shifts resources toward meeting the moment. It follows a predictable daily pattern, typically peaking in the early morning to help you wake and tapering to its lowest point at night to allow rest. The Science & Mechanism

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid synthesized from cholesterol in the adrenal cortex and governed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. When the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the pituitary secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which signals the adrenal glands to produce cortisol; rising cortisol then feeds back to suppress CRH and ACTH, forming a self-regulating loop. Circulating cortisol travels largely bound to corticosteroid-binding globulin, with a smaller free fraction that is biologically active. It exerts effects by binding intracellular glucocorticoid receptors that translocate to the nucleus and modulate gene transcription, which is why its actions are broad and relatively slow to unfold. Physiologically, cortisol promotes gluconeogenesis and raises available blood glucose, influences fat and protein metabolism, supports vascular tone and blood pressure, and modulates immune and inflammatory signaling. Its secretion is strongly circadian, driven by the suprachiasmatic clock to produce a characteristic morning peak (the cortisol awakening response) and an evening nadir. Research describes how chronic HPA-axis activation, disrupted rhythm, or receptor sensitivity changes are associated with altered metabolism, sleep, mood, and recovery.
