Signaling travels along several routes: the vagus nerve provides direct neural crosstalk; the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis links stress physiology to gut function through cortisol; endocrine cells in the gut lining release hormones such as GLP-1, PYY, and serotonin, of which the gut produces the large majority in the body; and immune messengers and microbial metabolites circulate systemically.
