Metabolic syndrome is not a single disease but a recognized grouping of risk factors that commonly travel together: increased waist circumference, elevated fasting glucose, higher blood pressure, raised triglycerides and lower HDL cholesterol. Clinicians generally note the pattern when several of these appear in the same person, since together they signal more metabolic strain than any one finding alone. It is common worldwide and becomes more prevalent with age, though it is increasingly seen earlier in life. The Underlying Biology

These processes influence the liver, promoting increased production of triglyceride-rich VLDL particles, lower HDL cholesterol and a shift toward small, dense LDL. Overlapping mechanisms—heightened sympathetic tone, sodium handling by the kidney and changes in the renin-angiotensin system—are studied in relation to blood pressure. Endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and altered adiponectin levels are also frequently described.
